Coupon Fraud Doesn’t Hurt Anyone…Does It?

You may think it’s ok to make copies of that printable coupon,  or knowingly use an expired coupon. It doesn’t hurt anyone, right? Wrong! You are hurting consumers and companies alike.

Extreme Couponing or Extreme Fraud?

People are being exposed on the TV Show Extreme Couponing for allegedly committing coupon fraud right before our very eyes. Check out this in-depth article on JillCataldo.com where couponer Jaime Kirlew used coupons on items that weren’t listed on the coupons. There are screenshots from the show to follow along with.

Also, check out here where she admitted to using these practices (that many call illegal, wrong, immoral, fraudulent, etc. ) and seems adamant that even though it may state one size, it’s alright to use it on another, because the bar code allows it. She claims she’s not doing any thing wrong. You be the judge.

There was also the episode that 16-year-old, Joel, was on. He had great coupons for toilet paper. Unfortunately, when the coupons were sent from the store to the manufacturer for payment, they wouldn’t pay. Why? It was a fraudulent coupon! Read about that here.

Arizona Coupon Ring

Recently, there were 3 women arrested for allegedly purchasing fake coupons from overseas and selling the fraudulent coupons on the website savvyshoppersite.com, which as of writing this, is no longer up. The site only allowed people to purchase things if they were referred by current customers. That alerts a red flag in my head!

According to the Associated Press, they each face felony charges of illegal control of an enterprise, forgery, counterfeit marking and engaging in a fraudulent scheme. They have all pleaded not guilty.

“We’re talking about anywhere from $400 to $600 million in loss,” said Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Dept. ”This is to American companies who produced American products and hire American citizens.” Read more about that here.

So, in the opinion of The Frugal Fairy, if you are going to use coupons, use them the way they are intended to be used.  I will now step away from my podium. Good day.  :)

  1. YES! Great post! I heard about the first lady and was so disgusted. I try to teach my kids to do the right thing and then I see others getting away with such nonsense. Pathetic.
    Thanks for the info.
    Blessings, Joanne
