So, it’s already April. Did you have a New Year’s resolution to lose weight? How is it going? If you are like most people who aim for weight loss for a new year, life gets in the way and after a week or so your resolutions are put on the back burner. Mine did.
This year has been filled with icky germs and viruses around my house. First, I spent my New Year’s Day in the hospital with the Flu. Around the same time, my 8-year-old and 13-year-old had colds. The oldest was diagnosed with “reactive airway disease” which I was told that basically he was having asthma-like issues, but he has never had asthma, so they can’t call it that until 3 episodes or something like that. Then, in the beginning of March, my 8-year-old (who does have asthma) and I had Strep and now my boys are sick once again!
That got me thinking. I think I should really be focusing more on health. Should I really be worrying about losing weight? Maybe if I just focus on health in general, the weight will be a positive side effect.
Don’t get me wrong. We’re not eating McDonald’s and chips all day long. I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian. That sounds like I should be healthy, right? Wrong. I eat way too many carbs and dairy. Not a great combo for weight loss. My kids both eat meat but I try to keep it as healthy as possible by giving them chicken instead of red meat, baking instead of frying and things like that. My oldest is more adventurous and more apt to try new veggies. But, the youngest would just rather stick to his broccoli. He likes when I juice, which is a great because I can get some spinach or kale in him.
On top of looking into ways to lower my carbs, like using Shirataki noodles instead of pasta, I am trying to expand my more healthful thinking onto my kids.
I’d love to go raw, but let’s face it, that would not happen overnight! I think that anything you’re not used to takes time. Baby steps and slip ups from time to time will get you closer to your goals than not trying at all.
I hope you are all doing well on your weight loss journey and look forward to keeping you updated on mine.
